Where SBR Food Grade Is Used in Gum Base Manufacturing

SBR food grade is the elastomer behind a range of gum base products rather than a single application. It appears in conventional chewing gum base, in bubble gum base and in bases for speciality formats such as centre-filled and coated pieces; the grade and the level change with the target, but the elastic, film-forming function is the same. What decides the choice is the finished product and the line it runs on, not the name on the carton.

What does the material contribute across a base plant?

The elastomer gives the base its elastic recovery and its film-forming backbone. Everything else in the blend supports that: the resins and tackifiers set how the base holds together during forming, the plasticisers and softeners set how workable it is, and the fillers give it body. The sweeteners, flavours and colours are added later, at the confectionery plant.

Because the elastomer sits at the centre of the chew, it is the first component to reconsider when a product's texture target changes. It is also the component where a silent change of grade or source is most disruptive, because a different elastomer resets the behaviour of the whole formula.

Which product formats rely on it?

FormatWhat the base has to deliverWhere it shows if it is wrong
Sheet chewing gumA soft, easy chew and good sheeting behaviourSheeting and forming problems
Bubble gumHigh elasticity, clean film forming, bubble stabilityBubbles that tear or fail to hold
Coated pellet and other coated piecesA base that takes coating without distortingShape and surface faults after coating
Centre-filled piecesA base that holds the filling and forms a stable shellLeaks and shape collapse at the filling point
Formed and compressed productsA base that forms cleanly at the target shapeForming loss and inconsistent weight
Functional and speciality gumAs above, plus a base that carries the intended active cleanlyTexture and release behaviour over shelf life

How does the base behave at each stage of manufacturing?

StageWhat the base must doWhat to watch
Weighing and chargingFeed in a consistent physical form so the recipe repeatsVariation between one charge and the next
Mixing and compoundingTake up the plasticiser and the other components without separatingStreaks, lumps or a base that will not blend in
Forming and sheetingForm a uniform film or sheet at the line's temperature and thicknessHoles, uneven thickness and torn edges
Cooling and conditioningSet to a stable state rather than staying soft or turning brittlePieces that stay sticky or crack after setting
Coating and finishingHold shape through the coating process where the format needs itDistortion and surface defects
Packing and storageKeep its behaviour across the storage conditions of the marketA chew that drifts over shelf life

What varies between applications, and what does not?

What varies is the elastomer grade and level, the blend ratio, the softener level, and the format itself. A base for a soft sheeting gum and a base for a high-elasticity bubble gum are built to different targets, and the same grade is not assumed to serve both.

What does not vary is the division of labour. Flavour, colour and shape belong to the confectionery producer, not to the base supplier. A base does not carry a taste of its own once it is compounded, and the same grade can serve fruit, mint, coffee or a centre-filled product. What the base does affect is how easily the line forms and finishes the piece, and whether the chew holds up over the shelf life the product is sold into.

How do you choose the grade for your application?

Work from the finished product, the equipment already on the line and the shelf-life target, then confirm the choice on a trial run rather than on a data sheet alone. Where the project also covers machinery and the wider plant, the same fit-for-duty thinking applies across the equipment range, from Grain Machines to a full Rice Mill Machine Line; the selection follows the duty, not the label.

WUXI HASEN matches the grade to the product being made and keeps the grade reference and the production source on file for repeat orders, so that a reorder matches rather than merely resembles the previous delivery.

FAQ

Can one grade cover all gum base applications?

No. Conventional chewing gum, bubble gum and speciality formats are different targets. A grade that works for one is not assumed to work for another.

Where in the plant does the base matter most?

At compounding and forming, where the elastomer's behaviour is most visible. A base that looks fine in a carton can still form badly on the line.

Is the material used only in gum base?

Within this scope it is used as the elastomer in gum base formulations. Its food-grade controls are what allow it to be used in food-contact work.

What is the first thing to fix before choosing a grade?

The finished product and the equipment already on the line. Supply against a product description, not a product name.

Can you supply the same grade across several product lines?

Yes, where the target is the same. Where the formats differ, expect a different grade for each one.

What to send us for a precise answer

Send us your grain type, target capacity, the equipment already on your line and the part you are replacing. WUXI HASEN supplies machines, spare parts and full grain processing lines, including parts for equipment built by other suppliers. You can reach our team at amina@immyhitech.com.
