A sugar line meets a separation machine under conditions a flour mill never sees: raw material arrives with soil, tops and fibrous surface matter, the duty runs continuously into a washing and extraction train, and hygiene standards are strict. The machine here is not recovering flour from bran; it is dry cleaning incoming raw material and lifting loose fibre and fines out of the stream before the material is washed and extracted. Matching the unit to that duty, rather than to a milling catalogue, is what decides whether the stage helps or becomes a nuisance.
Sugar mills and refineries handle raw material that carries field soil, leaf and fibrous surface matter along with the useful fraction. Before washing and extraction, a cleaning stage loosens and removes that surface material so the downstream train sees a steadier feed and less contamination. In this role the separation stage has to handle a damp, heavy and abrasive stream, keep the process flowing without frequent stops, and be easy to clean, because hygiene in a food plant is not optional.
It also has to be honest about what it can do. A brushing and aspirating stage removes loose surface material; it does not sterilise the stream, and it does not replace washing. Its contribution is to give the washing and extraction stages a cleaner, more even feed.
| Requirement | Why it matters in a sugar line |
|---|---|
| Capacity matched to mill throughput | The cleaning stage must not starve the extraction train |
| Resistance to damp and abrasive stock | Raw material arrives wet and gritty, which wears components faster |
| Hygiene and wash-down | Food-plant cleaning routines must not be blocked by the design |
| Corrosion-resistant contact parts | Moisture and dissolved material attack ordinary steel |
| Mesh sized to the material | Fibrous matter and fines behave differently from dry grain |
| Repeatable spare parts | Brushes and screens wear and must be replaceable to the same dimensions |
The cleaning and separation steps decide how much work the washer is asked to do. If the dry stage does its job, the washer carries less load; if it does not, the washer has to compensate.
Confirm the feed comes from the intended point and that the removed material and the cleaned stream go to separate destinations. Check that the mesh matches the material, that the rotor turns freely in the correct direction, and that the drive is aligned. On the first steady run, watch both outlets and record what each carries, so you have a local reference for later. Confirm that cleaning access is usable in practice, not only on the drawing.
Brushes and screens wear first because they contact a damp, gritty stream. Inspect on a fixed interval against an agreed wear limit rather than waiting for performance to fall. Because the material is damp, corrosion and build-up deserve attention on the same visit: check contact parts, seals and gaskets, and clean areas where material collects. Belts, couplings and bearings follow in the usual order for a rotating machine, and replacement brushes, screens and seals are standard flour mill parts that are matched by size and part number.
It is the same family of separating and brushing equipment, but the duty differs: here it dry cleans damp, fibrous raw material before washing, rather than recovering flour from dry bran.
Because it is a food process. The machine has to be cleanable and its contact parts have to resist moisture and product build-up, or cleaning routines become slow and unreliable.
That depends on your product and your cleaning chemicals, so confirm it with the supplier rather than assuming. The point is to name the parts that touch the product and agree what they are made of.
No. A brushing and aspirating stage removes loose surface material and fines. It does not replace washing or sterilise the stream, and it should not be sold as if it does.
Match its rated throughput to your extraction train and ask how the rating was measured. Treat a catalogue figure as a starting point and confirm it against your own material. Related grain machines are specified the same way.
Send us your grain type, target capacity, the equipment already on your line and the part you are replacing. WUXI HASEN supplies machines, spare parts and full grain processing lines, including parts for equipment built by other suppliers. You can reach our team at amina@immyhitech.com.
